In January, Colorado became one of five states, including Alaska, Illinois, Nebraska and Washington, that requires its DUI offenders to install a special interlock-ignition device in their cars, after they are convicted.

The device was designed to keep intoxicated drivers off of the road. In order to start the car, the driver must blow into a breathalyzer device. If he or she registers a blood alcohol content over the legal limit, the vehicle will not start.

In the past, law enforcement officials have tried to curb drunk driving by suspending the licenses of those who disobey the law. However, studies have shown that these individuals continue to drive, endangering themselves and others. By utilizing this new device, lawmakers in Colorado hope to make it easier for drivers who have been convicted of DUIs to get to school or to work, without posing a threat to society.
